Acacia Water and Dhaka University, in partnership with UNICEF and DPHE conducted the action research on managed aquifer recharge in the coastal plain of Bangladesh from 2009-2011.

The project is implemented by Department of Geology, Dhaka University and Acacia Water of the Netherlands and started in 2009 with a preliminary assessment of water buffering needs and opportunities in the country. This led to the field research focusing on the coastal plain (Khulna and Satkhira Districts) to test the feasibility of injecting fresh rainwater in shallow brackish aquifers. This action research program has focused on the testing and piloting of fresh water infiltration in brackish shallow aquifers. Four test sites were selected in Khulna and Shatkira where pilot schemes were designed to infiltrate pond water and rainwater in the aquifer though infiltration wells and creating a fresh water bubble in the aquifer for use during the dry season. Four more sites were constructed in 2011 and will be tested in 2012.

More information and results can be found in this flyer.
