Ecokick is back in Ethiopia: experiment ‘Basin in Balance’ in Ziway Shalla

Ethiopia has been described as one of the countries in the world most threatened by soil erosion. To find solutions for this problem we’ve started an experiment in which we compare innovative Soil and Water Conservation (SWC) measures against more conventional interventions.

Ethiopia has been described as one of the countries in the world most threatened by soil erosion. To find solutions for this problem we’ve started an experiment in which we compare innovative Soil and Water Conservation (SWC) measures against more conventional interventions.

Last week the Ecosystem Kickstarter (@EcoKick; https://ecosystemkickstarter.com/) experiment plot was setup in Adazer Kebele in cooperation with woreda district experts and the local community. At the experiment plot multiple grass seeds (Rhodes, Kikuyu & Desho) were planted using different methods following the EcoKick approach. EcoKick uses foldable structures made from biodegradable cardboard fibres that create a natural terrace which stops erosion and improves water infiltration.

The experiment plot will be compared against a reference plot with conventional “soil bunds” with grass seeds. The objective is to compare erosion and soil loss reduction as well as germination and survival rate of the different grass seeds.

Will the seeds well germinate in the coming period and contribute to soil protection? Hopefully this is a first step in decreasing the soil erosion problem!
